Important — rules and eligibility can change
Higher education requirements, Student Finance England rules and UK immigration rules depend on individual circumstances and can change. This page provides general information and signposting, not a guarantee of admission, funding or immigration status. Always use the official links provided for the latest position.
Start with the questions students ask most often
Select a question and we will take you directly to the relevant guidance below.
Check when your course starts
England is moving to the Lifelong Learning Entitlement for many eligible courses starting from January 2027.
Existing Student Finance system
Students starting relevant undergraduate courses before 1 January 2027 generally use the existing Student Finance England system, subject to eligibility.
Current Student Finance guidance ↗Lifelong Learning Entitlement
For most eligible courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027, students will need to use the Lifelong Learning Entitlement funding system. Applications begin from September 2026 for relevant January 2027 starts.
Read the LLE guidance ↗Getting Started How do I choose the right university course?
Start with your previous education, subjects you enjoy, career direction, preferred location, study level and entry requirements. Course names can look similar while their modules, assessments and professional focus may be very different.
Compare the official course page for each university before making a final choice.
Getting Started Can I contact Study Consulting if I do not know what I want to study?
Yes. You can begin with your qualifications, interests, previous work experience, preferred location and future goals. These can help narrow down subject areas and possible study levels.
You do not need to choose a university before making an initial enquiry.
Getting Started What is a Foundation Year?
A Foundation Year is an additional academic stage offered with selected undergraduate degrees. It can help students prepare for degree-level study where they meet the relevant foundation entry requirements but not necessarily the standard direct-entry requirements.
It is not available for every course or institution, and successful progression requirements vary.
Getting Started What is a Top-Up degree?
A Top-Up programme can allow an eligible applicant with an appropriate existing higher education qualification, such as certain HNDs or foundation degrees, to progress towards a full bachelor's qualification.
Entry is not automatic. The university will assess the level, subject content, credits and relevance of your previous study.
Getting Started Am I too old to apply to university?
Universities accept mature applicants and there is no general rule that university study is only for school leavers. Entry requirements and funding rules are separate matters and should be checked for your circumstances.
UCAS generally describes an undergraduate applicant aged 21 or over as a mature student.
Getting Started Can I go to university without A levels?
Potentially. Universities may accept different UK and international qualifications and some programmes offer foundation or alternative-entry routes.
The relevant university decides whether your qualifications and experience satisfy the specific entry requirements.
Applications Do all university applications have to go through UCAS?
No. UCAS is the main application system for many UK undergraduate programmes, but some universities and courses may also use direct application routes. Postgraduate programmes are commonly applied for directly through the provider, although arrangements vary.
Always follow the official application instructions for the specific course.
Applications What are the UCAS deadlines for 2027 entry?
For 2027 entry, the equal-consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses is currently 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine/science courses use an earlier 15 October 2026 deadline.
Some courses have different deadlines, so applicants should always check the latest UCAS information and the individual course page.
Applications Has the UCAS personal statement changed?
Yes. For applications from the 2026 entry cycle, the UCAS personal statement is structured around three questions rather than one uninterrupted essay.
The questions cover why you want to study the subject, how your qualifications have prepared you, and what you have done outside formal education that is useful preparation.
Applications Do I need a reference for a UCAS application?
UCAS undergraduate applications normally require a reference before the completed application can be submitted. Who provides it depends on whether you are applying through a school, college, centre or independently.
Check UCAS guidance for your application route.
Applications What is a conditional university offer?
A conditional offer means the university is prepared to offer you a place if you meet specified conditions. These might involve examination results, qualification completion, English-language evidence or other requirements.
Read every condition carefully and meet any deadlines stated by the institution.
Applications What does an unconditional offer mean?
An unconditional offer generally means the academic conditions for admission have already been satisfied. You may still need to complete administrative, financial, identity, immigration or enrolment requirements before starting.
Applications What is UCAS Clearing?
Clearing is the UCAS process universities and colleges use to fill course places that remain available. It can be relevant to applicants who apply later, hold no suitable offer, miss offer conditions or become eligible for Clearing for another reason.
Availability changes quickly and places are not guaranteed.
Applications Can I change my university or course after applying?
Sometimes, but the correct process depends on the stage of your application, the institution and whether you are already enrolled. Do not simply stop attending or assume a transfer is automatic.
Ask the university and, where relevant, UCAS, Student Finance England and UKVI about the effect before making the change.
Documents What supporting documents might a university ask for?
Requirements vary, but common documents can include qualification certificates, academic transcripts, English-language evidence, identification, a CV, references and translated versions of documents where relevant.
International applicants may also be asked for passport or immigration-status information. Only provide documents through the route requested by the university, UCAS or another authorised system.
Documents What is an academic transcript?
An academic transcript is an official record of subjects, modules, grades or results from your previous education. International qualifications may require both the original transcript and an appropriate translation.
Documents My certificates are not in English. Do I need translations?
A university, UCAS or UKVI may require an appropriate English translation when documents are in another language. The exact certification requirements can differ depending on what the document is being used for.
Follow the instructions of the organisation requesting the document rather than assuming any translation will be accepted.
Documents Can I upload documents directly to UCAS?
UCAS has introduced document uploads for applicants applying directly through Clearing for 2026 entry after 30 June, and for applicants in the 2027 cycle. The documents available depend on the applicant and relevant application section.
UCAS states that document upload is optional and does not replace completing the application itself. Universities can still request additional evidence.
Documents Should I send my passport by ordinary email?
Sensitive identity documents should only be supplied when required and through the secure or authorised route specified by the organisation requesting them.
Do not upload passports, immigration documents or similar sensitive files into an unrelated public contact form.
Documents What if my final qualification certificate is not available yet?
This does not automatically prevent an application. For UCAS document uploads, UCAS specifically recognises that applicants may not yet have their final official certificate. A university may later request the relevant evidence.
Student Finance Am I eligible for Student Finance England?
There is no single answer based only on nationality. Eligibility can depend on your nationality or immigration status, residence history, where your home is, your course, provider, age and previous study.
GOV.UK provides an official nationality and residency checker. Use that before relying on general advice.
Student Finance Can someone with settled status receive Student Finance England?
Settled status can be relevant to eligibility, but status alone does not automatically determine the outcome. Residence history, where your home is, course and other conditions can also matter.
Use the official GOV.UK eligibility checker for your specific circumstances.
Student Finance Can someone with pre-settled status receive student finance?
Potentially, but the type of support can differ and eligibility depends on the legal and residence category you fall within. Pre-settled status does not by itself guarantee full Tuition Fee and Maintenance support.
Check your exact position using the official nationality and residency service.
Student Finance I studied at university before. Can I receive student finance again?
Previous higher education can affect Tuition Fee Loan entitlement. Under the system applying to many courses starting before January 2027, funding is normally aimed at a first higher education qualification, with exceptions and a calculation that takes previous study into account.
For eligible courses beginning under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement from January 2027, previous government-funded study is instead relevant to the learner's remaining overall tuition-fee entitlement.
Student Finance Can Student Finance fund a repeated year?
It can depend on your previous study and the reason you are repeating. Student Finance England may consider compelling personal reasons, such as serious personal circumstances, where appropriate supporting evidence is provided.
Never assume an additional funded year has been approved until Student Finance England confirms it.
Student Finance Why does Student Finance ask about household income?
Household income can affect means-tested support, particularly the amount of Maintenance Loan or certain additional support available.
Which person's income is assessed and which tax year is relevant depends on your circumstances and the funding system applying to your course.
Student Finance What is the difference between a Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan?
A Tuition Fee Loan is intended to help cover eligible course tuition fees and is normally paid directly to the university or provider. A Maintenance Loan helps with living costs and is normally paid to the eligible student.
Eligibility for one does not automatically mean you qualify for the other.
Student Finance How can I estimate how much student finance I may receive?
GOV.UK provides an official student finance calculator covering relevant 2026–27 courses and eligible courses under the new system from January 2027.
An estimate is not a formal funding decision.
Student Finance What is the Lifelong Learning Entitlement?
The Lifelong Learning Entitlement, or LLE, is the new student finance system for many eligible courses and modules beginning on or after 1 January 2027. It covers certain qualifications and modules from levels 4 to 6 and some level 7 study.
It changes how previous study and tuition-fee entitlement are considered, so students beginning from 2027 should not rely solely on older SFE guidance.
Student Finance Is funding for a Master's degree the same as undergraduate finance?
No. Postgraduate Master's funding has separate rules. Do not assume that undergraduate Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan arrangements apply to a Master's programme.
Immigration Do I need a Student visa to study in the UK?
Whether you need immigration permission depends on your nationality, immigration status, course and circumstances. A Student visa is the main sponsored study route for many international students.
People who already hold an appropriate UK status, such as valid settled or pre-settled status, do not normally apply for a Student visa solely because they begin university.
Immigration What is a CAS?
CAS means Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is a reference issued by a licensed student sponsor after the relevant requirements are met and is required for a Student visa application.
An offer letter is not the same thing as a CAS.
Immigration How can I check whether a university can sponsor Student visas?
Check the official UKVI Register of Licensed Sponsors: Students. A university appearing elsewhere online does not prove that it currently holds the required sponsor licence.
Immigration What documents are normally needed for a Student visa?
GOV.UK states that applicants must provide a valid passport or travel document and a CAS. Depending on circumstances, applicants may also need financial evidence, ATAS, TB results, parental consent, sponsorship consent or other evidence.
The exact list depends on the individual application.
Immigration How much money must I show for a Student visa?
The amount depends on your course fees, study location, circumstances and whether an exemption applies. As of August 2026, the published living-cost figure for a Student visa is £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months.
These amounts can change. Always check GOV.UK immediately before preparing your evidence.
Immigration Is IELTS always required for a Student visa?
No. IELTS is not the only possible way to demonstrate English. Depending on the circumstances, English can be proven through qualifying education, an approved English test or assessment by an eligible higher education provider.
For Student visa purposes, degree-level study generally requires English equivalent to CEFR B2 and below-degree study generally requires B1, subject to the applicable rules and exemptions.
Immigration How early can I apply for a Student visa?
GOV.UK currently states that an applicant applying from outside the UK can apply up to six months before the course starts. An eligible applicant applying from inside the UK can generally apply up to three months before the course starts.
Additional timing and current-permission rules apply to applications made from inside the UK.
Immigration Can I enter the UK as a visitor and switch to a Student visa?
Under the current rules, a person with a visit visa cannot switch to the Student route from inside the UK. Other categories are also excluded from switching.
Check the current GOV.UK rules before making any travel or immigration decision.
Immigration Can an international student bring a partner or children to the UK?
Student visa dependant rights are now restricted. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the relevant course normally needs to be a PhD/doctorate or a research-based higher degree, unless the student qualifies under the separate government-sponsored student provisions.
Do not assume that studying a Master's programme automatically allows dependants.
Immigration What is ATAS and do I need it?
ATAS is the Academic Technology Approval Scheme. Some international students and researchers studying certain sensitive subjects at relevant postgraduate levels need an ATAS certificate.
Whether you need it depends on your nationality and course.
Immigration Who should give me individual immigration advice?
Individual immigration advice should be obtained from an appropriately authorised immigration adviser or another professional legally permitted to provide it.
Study Consulting can provide general study-related information and official signposting but does not replace regulated immigration advice.
Work Can I work while studying on a Student visa?
It depends on your course, sponsor and immigration permission. Current sponsor guidance states that a qualifying full-time degree-level student at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance can generally work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during vacations.
Some below-degree students have a 10-hour limit, while some students have no work permission. Always check the conditions attached to your own immigration permission.
Work Can I be self-employed on a Student visa?
The Student visa route currently prohibits self-employment. Students should not assume that staying within a weekly-hours limit makes self-employment acceptable.
Experience Can work experience strengthen my university application?
Yes, where it is relevant. UCAS specifically allows applicants to explain work experience, employment, volunteering and other preparation in the third personal-statement question.
The important part is not simply listing a job. Explain what you learned, which transferable skills you developed and why the experience is relevant to your chosen subject.
Experience Can work experience replace academic qualifications?
There is no general UK rule that work experience automatically replaces academic entry requirements. Some universities and courses may take relevant professional or prior experiential learning into account, particularly for mature applicants.
The university decides whether your experience is sufficient for its specific course.
Work Can I work full time during university holidays?
Some qualifying Student visa holders can work full time during official vacation periods. However, whether a period counts as a vacation and whether you have that work permission depends on your course, sponsor and immigration conditions.
Postgraduate courses may not have the same vacation pattern as undergraduate programmes. Confirm term dates with your sponsor.
After Graduation Can I stay in the UK after successfully completing my degree?
Eligible graduates may be able to apply for the Graduate visa after successful completion of an eligible course while holding qualifying Student permission.
Under the current rules, a non-doctoral Graduate visa lasts 2 years if the application is made on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if the application is made on or after 1 January 2027. PhD and other doctoral graduates receive three years.
After Graduation Can I extend a Graduate visa?
The Graduate visa itself cannot normally be extended. An eligible person may be able to switch into another immigration category, such as Skilled Worker, if all requirements of that route are met.
After Graduation Do I need a job offer before applying for the Graduate visa?
The Graduate route is not based on obtaining an employer-sponsored job offer first. However, you must meet the Graduate route's education, immigration and application requirements.
If you later want to move to a sponsored work route, different requirements will apply.
